The Unseen Frame

2021, Shanghai

Interactive Installation

We are the subject of the gazing as well as the object of the gazing.

This work plays on the audience’s curiosity about the camera. By staring into the lens, viewers unknowingly intrude into the “secret” space created by the artist. While onlookers can’t see the screen, the person behind the camera becomes the focus of attention.

The photographer sees “themselves” through the camera and can capture the image, passing the role to the next person. This shifts their identity back to being observed. The work examines watching as appreciation or violation, uncovering subtle, unconscious acts of intrusion in daily life.
